(D) Dan Work (G)
Gerry Wilder
#1 The most important
scorecard playoff hole. D wins the flip
and chooses to hit first. He pulls his
drive down the left side deep in the rough.
G hits a nice one down the right center of the fairway. D can’t find his ball and is blocked out by a
tree and hits a provisional. It’s a nice
draw around the tree coming to rest just off the right fringe. He then finds his original ball and plays it,
but hits the tree that was blocking him out leaving 45 yards to a back
pin. G second shot is a good one to the
green, but comes up some 45 feet short to that back pin. D chips on the green,
but well short and records a critical 3 putt double bogey. Sometimes it’s best not to find your ball and
just take a leaf rule no penalty. G three putts from distance, but gives him a
cover on the scorecard playoff.
#2 Coming to #2 tee box
Gerry says he is nervous as a whore in Church.
G drive is not bad just trickling over cart path, but a clear shot to
the green. D after a double bogey comes
back with one long and straight center cut in good position for his next shot
to a front pin. G from 160 yards chips
to short right some 30 feet from the putting surface to a front pin. D pulls his 2nd shot to the left
bunker. G chips on the green leaving him
a 15 footer for par.
D blast out of the bunker to15 feet past the pin. Both players two putt for bogey.
#3 G pulls his tee shot
left of the cart path by the big tree. D
hits a nice one on the green to 20 feet ending up later close enough for the
greenie. G chips to the green leaving 20 feet for par. D blows his birdie putt by 4 feet, but makes
the comeback to save par. Gerry’s par
putt is 3 feet by, but makes his bogey putt.
#4 D with honors launches
one long and down the middle. G drive is
down left side about 10 yards short of the corner. G advances his 2nd shot about 135
yards down to the left rough. D in
perfect position connects on a long one leaving him only 50 yards out. G pulls 3rd shot to left
bunker. D chip to a back pin is 30 feet short.
G blast out, but leaves a difficult putt from the fringe to the back pin
and 3 putts for a double. D records a
nice two putt par and gains 2 shots.
#5 D pushes drive to deep right woods. G with a good drive to a right center fairway
location. G from 100 yards chips to 10
feet short of the green to a front pin.
D from 72 yards from the trees comes up short of the green about 10
yards. D chips up to 14 feet short and
two putts for bogey. G putts up through
the rough and fringe and it comes up a predictable 12 feet short. G two putts for bogey as players halve the
hole.
#6 D drives down the right side and just stays
in the fairway by a couple of feet. G
drives down the middle leaving 125 yards in to a middle pin. D chips to 40 feet left of the pin on the
fringe. G with a little mis-hit to right
and it comes up short of the greenside bunker.
G chips up to 12 feet and makes it for an important par while D two
putts from long range for par.
#7 D drives with a draw to
left rough. G with an unusual hook to
deeper in the rough short of D. G comes
out of the rough nicely down the fairway leaving 160 yards in. D advances his 2nd down the left
rough leaving only 72 yards to an ugly back left pin. D hits a nice chip to the green leaving 15
feet, but three putts for bogey. G brilliantly
two putts from 50 feet for par.
#8 G tee shot to short
right of the green about 15 yards. D
bounces one up to green coming to rest only 20 feet from the pin. Probably another greenie. G chips short of green to fringe and two
putts for bogey. D with a disappointing
3 putt bogey.
#9 D launches a 5 iron down
the right side just catching the rough.
G pulls one in the left trees which has the look of a layup which he
does execute well. D from 140 yards
pulls shot terribly left and it doesn’t clear the water. G 80 yard iron shot is a nice one to 30 feet
resulting in a two putt bogey. D hitting
his 4th comes up 16 feet from the pin with a miss bogey putt for a
painful double bogey.
After 9 holes
Wilder
+1 to Work +1/2
#10 G drives down the
middle. D with a drop kick drive 25
yards short of G. D 2nd ends
up 132 yards out. G hits one down left
side leaving just 80 yards in to a back pin.
G just clears greenside bunker coming to rest on the fringe leaving a
long putt. D 3rd is a good
one to 30 feet. G putt is not bad, but
runs by 6 feet and he misses par putt. D
records a 2 putt par.
#11 D drives to right
trees. G drives to left trees in the
rough, but advances 2nd shot down to 15 yards short of the
green. D from the trees comes to rest in
left rough 35 yards from the green. D chips
on the green to 10 feet. G chips up to 8
feet. Both players record two putt
bogeys.
#12 G with a good drive to a
left center fairway.. D drives long down
the right side catching rough with some tree trouble. G duffs one only advancing about 30
yards. D from the rough is short right
of the green. G chips up to18 feet past
and three putts for a double. D chips to
9 feet and misses par putt for a bogey.
#13 D hooks tee shot left
near cart path. G using driver smacks
one on the green to 25 feet. D with a
most difficult chip to a tight back left pin is nothing but net for an
unbelievable birdie. Gerry putts to 4
feet and misses for a disappointing bogey.
Could D birdie chip be a turning point of the match?
#14 D with a long beauty
drawing off the right bunker to only a couple yards from the water. Gerry follows with a nice one of his own down
the middle, but some 30 yards behind D. G
with a crushing mis-hit into the lake. D
pulls 2nd left of the fairway ,but clears
the last trees leaving only about 60 yards.
G after a drop hits a nice one to 10 yards short of the green. G chips up, but doesn’t get up and down to
save bogey. D just misses what would
have been back to back birdies, but records a par.
#15 D drives long down left
center. G after pushing tee shot well
right declares “I think my wheels are coming off”. From the trees G blast out nicely with off
the deck driver to 30 yards short of the green.
D from 121 yards records a nice iron shot to about 23 feet. Gerry chips up also to about 22 feet. D with a two putt
par and G with a two putt bogey.
The
match seems to be slipping away from the favorite G.
#16 D with long one in left
rough past the crossing cart path. G
follows with a solid drive down the middle. G from 135 yards comes up short
right of the greenside bunker. D chips
up short of the green about 15 yards. G
chips nicely over the bunker to a back pin leaving only 9 feet for par. D chips up well short of pin and 3 putts for
a double bogey. G misses the well needed
par putt for bogey.
#17 G with a devastating bad
shot not clearing the water. D with a
clutch shot right over the front pin coming to rest 15 feet beyond. G with 3rd shot over the water
leaves it short of the green and doesn’t get it up and in recording a game
ending double bogey. D three putts for
bogey.
#18 D screams one down the
right center which could be best drive of the day leaving only 90 yards
in. G bounces one off the trees left
back into the fairway. G second shot is
a mis-hit left to just short of the lake.
D shot to the green is a good one to 15 feet. G chips on the green and two putts for
bogey. D two putts for par and the match
ends.
It
was a very close match throughout with D chip in birdie on #13 being a big
changing factor.
