Results for Thursday August 29th on a pleasantly hot, wet from watering West course (10) players.

It's a messed up money day with team #1, Dan Work, Larry Wiggins and Tom Ashe winning the FRONT and TOTAL and tying the BACK  +11 +9 +20

Tying the BACK Team #2, Glenn Bell, Mike Landreth and Helen Kim -2 +9 +7.

Team #3  Sam Kim, Ted Yeiser, Sue Callaghan and Charlie Swan -1, +8 +7.

My bad. Team #3 mistakenly got the back money. I should have recalculated team #3' s score on my W/P not in my head.  If not getting 83.33333 cents in winnings effects anyone on team #1 or team #2 then-----the cookie has crumbled!

Reported by Mike Landreth (You can’t make this stuff up!)

Note from OTH Web Developer:  This was too good not to publish for historical purposes.  I took the liberty to make a few minor edits but none regarding substance of the report as skillfully written by Mike Landreth.  Targets and Leaderboard data will not be revised as a result of today’s play.

Results for Wednesday August 28, 2024. It was another hot day on the West but the mild wind plus riding in carts made it not too bad.

WHERE WERE YOU???

Two players showed up – Tom Tweel and Mike Landreth. We may need Dan Work’s help on the timing. We were on the putting green and saw a fivesome at the #1 tee box so we hurried down and asked if they would let a twosome go in front of them.   So, Dan we started the round at 8:50. Tom decided to hit from the red tees with me. We were playing pretty fast on holes 1 through 3. When we arrived at our tee-shots in the fairway on number 4, Sue Callaghan came riding up and asked if she could join us. Now Dan, this cost us some time because we had to wait for her to go back to the tee box and hit. After that we started moving at a good pace, again, but we did notice there was a single and another fivesome up ahead of us.  We had to start waiting on hole number 5. On hole number 6 it was so bad we went up to the single and asked her if she wanted to join us. So now, we are a foursome and the new player is on track to shoot over 60 on the front. (I did notice that she and Tom got along very well though).  I’m going to ask Dan what time we should finish the front based on all the above. We finished the front at 10:30.  1 hour and 40 minutes after adding two players and waiting on a fivesome. Is this good Dan?  The 4th player dropped out at the turn so now we are back to a threesome. The fivesome in front of us were so slow we decided to skip hole 10 and go to 11. We each took a bogey even though some of us would have parred it. The back nine was not as eventful other than Tom taking naps on each tee box while Sue and I hit. We would wake him up when it was his turn. We finished the round at 12:09pm. That is 3 Hrs. nineteen minutes for sometimes a twosome, sometimes a threesome sometimes a foursome and sometimes waiting on a fivesome. Dan, is this good or bad???  Here are the results even though we did not bet and probably will not record in the OTH stats.

August 23, 2024

Results for Friday August 23rd on a day more reminiscent of Memphis in August (10 players).  Some of the returning heat was the result of natural climate conditions that occur after the passage of a cool spell and some was generated by all  the sand covering the greens,  but most was the result of crazy wild play offered up by Team #1 on the back, and several notable performances by individuals like Buddy with 2 under par on the back and +6 total, and +5 rounds by Glenn, Helen, and Dan who, incidentally, was not caught holding anyone up today by the Windyke Speed Patrol.

·        Team #1 – Ted Yeiser, Dan Work, and Buddy Ritchey won the BACK and TOTAL:  Even, +14, +14

·        Team #2 – Sam Kim, Glenn Bell, Ed Schneider won the FRONT: +6,  Even,  +6

·        Team #3 – Tom Tweel, Sue Callaghan, Helen Kim, and Gerry Wilder actually made it around the course in less than 3 hours and 45 minutes:  +½, +2 ½, +3

July 24, 2024

Results for Wednesday July 24th on another humid day when the skies opened up on us on Hole #16 making puddles on the greens and other nasty conditions. Much like yesterday, today’s 6 players were pretty well drenched by the end of the round and during the money distribution.

IT'S A SPEEDY SLOPPY SWAMPY SWIMMING SWEEP

Sam (who from this day will be known as the Greenie Meanie) once again acted like the rain and the puddles on the greens just weren’t there as he dominated the Greenie game in spite of the adverse conditions.

·   Team #1 – Glenn Bell, Helen Kim, and Larry Wiggins deserved something by playing through the drenching rain on #15 and #16 but came up with nothing, scoring     -2 ½,  -5 ½,  -8.

·   Team #2 – Sam Kim, Ted Yeiser, and Gerry Wilder managed to hang in there with     -½,  -2 ½,  -3.

Results for Tuesday July 23rd on a round taking only 2 ½ hours to play but the last hole was in a deluge,  speeding up the process but to no avail.  All three players were soaked by the time they reached the green but good ol’ Sam didn’t notice the rain and parred the hole.

IT'S A SPEEDY ALMOST SWEEP

Sam was not only excellent in the rain, but also sank two 30 foot putts for birdies before he got to the 4th hole.  It is evident that he could be a pretty good golfer if he gets the middle holes under control.

The winner of the FRONT, tying the BACK, and winning the TOTAL was, you guessed it, Sam Kim  +2½,  +½,  +3

Results for Friday, July 19th, following an amazing recovery of the water soaked EAST Course and a day which felt like mid-fall instead of mid-summer.  Nine golfers enjoyed the nice weather and good course conditions.

It was a MISSING QUARTER WASH.

At the end of the day, when all the dollars and quarters were passed out, one golfer, not named in this version of the story, came up $0.25 (one quarter, for those who struggle with numbers) short.  Where it went, nobody knows, but our lawyer friend announced he would not bring his winnings back out of his pocket to make sure he was paid off (he is a lawyer, so go figure) properly.  Seeing all this teeth gnashing over $0.25, one would think we were playing for 2500 dollars  instead of 25 cents.

·        Team #1 – Helen Kim, Tom Tweel, and Ted Yeiser won the BACK with   +½,  +2 ½,   +3

·        Team #2 – Buddy Ritchey, Sam Kim, and Charlie Swan won the FRONT with   +3 ½,   -5 ½,   -2

July 17, 2024

Results for Wednesday, July 17th , on comfortable day ‘till the rains came toward the end of a 9-hole match.  The 3rd team got a good drenching on hole #9.  There were 9 players including two who were working on qualifying rounds.

IT'S A SOMEKINDOF SWEEP (since there was only one team bet)

·        Team #1 – Dan Work, Tom Tweel, and Mike Landreth came at +½

·        Team #2 – Glenn Bell, Sue Callaghan, and Yuri Kim scored -2

·        Team #3 – Ted Yeiser, Charlie Wilder, and Gerry Wilder waddled in with +5 to win the FRONT and only bet.

The group agreed by unanimous vote among todays players to double each of the qualifiers’ scores and allow those doubled scores to be used as qualification rounds.  This will complete Yuri’s qualification and Charlie will need one additional round to become fully qualified to lose their money like the rest of us.

Memorial:  In case you missed Van’s note earlier today.

Pat Ashe, Tom Ashe's lovely wife in so many ways, suffered a massive stroke on Thursday and passed away Saturday.  Arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Suggestion:  There are lots of hot weather days between now and the shorter days of fall.  Please drink plenty of water before and during golf to make sure you do not become dehydrated.  Also, if you tend to sweat very much, consider some salty food or drink sports drinks to assure adequate electrolyte intake.  Most of us are old and wise, but not physically invincible.

Results for Wednesday, June 12th, a warm, sunny day with light breezes on the West course (12 players)

Four teams showed up but only two of them split the pot.   Mike Weerasignhe, who participated in extracting money from the evenly split pot, was showing off some new techniques seldom used by OTH members.  One was his gigantic pinball machine on hole #11 where the little pins causing his ball to bounce from one to another happened to be 3 foot diameter oak trees.  Another technique he used on the same hole was marking his ball which eventually made it to the green then leaving it in place, with the marker beside it, to block Charlie Swan’s par putt.  Charlie’s putt went around Mike’s ball anyhow and into the hole which made that tactic fairly useless.

Another even more impressive bit of golfing stardom was Tom Tweel knocking down a 75 yard approach shot on #18 for an amazing EAGLE.

·         Team #1 – Mike Landreth, Tom Tweel, and Glenn Bell     +½,  +2 ½,  +3.

·         Team #2 – Charlie Swan, Mike W+10, and Gerry Wilder won the BACK and tied the TOTAL     +3,  +3,  +6.

·         Team #3 – Buddy Ritchey, Ted Yeiser, and Ed Schneider won the FRONT and tied the TOTAL     +8 ½,  -2 ½,  +6.

March 13th on the warmest day of the year so far. The East course was no match for this group today. All teams shot positive numbers on both the front and back nine.

Team one (Ed S. Jim H. and Helen) was spending all their winnings with a + 5, + 5, +10, when team 2 (Sam K., Buddy, R and Mike B) came in and announced that they shot  +8, +9, +17. stunning both team 1 and team 3 (Glen B., Bill T, and Sue C.) with a +1/2, +2 1/2, +3. Thus it was a stunning stupendous sweep by Team 2.

Addendum:  As the game wore on with Team #1 who were not exactly exciting to watch, Van decided to sponsor a long drive contest between Jet Tims and Mike Landreth.  After pinning a $1 bill on the #16 tee box, neither of the contestants won the prize because neither hit his ball in the fairway.  In fact, Wilder was the only one in the group who hit the fairway but whoever would consider Wilder for a “long drive” contest?  The contest was settled on #18 when Jet hit a monster drive that trickled into the rough while Mike hit a pop up qualifying for the infield fly rule but landed in the fairway.  After his sky-high drive, Mike went on to double-bogey the hole as he collected his dollar bill from Van.   The moral to this story is:  weird things happen when Van puts up money that he cannot win back.

Results for Friday Feb. 16th on the East.  It was a pleasant day on the course for some of us but not all. The weather was perfect, 90 degree rule was in effect. We started out with 6 Players but one dropped out due to back pain leaving team 1 with only 2 players. But Helen K and Tom T were up to the task as they soundly swept  Ed S., Glen B., and Sam K. Their even, -1, -1 was more than enough to beat a -4 1/2, -4 1/2, -9.

You just can't make this stuff up:  On #10 Ed S. addresses his 3rd shot down the right side near the cart path.  His shot is a dead cold 90 degree shank hitting his cart in the front left wheel knocking off the hubcap.  If we were playing by USGA rules he would have incurred a 2 shot penalty for hitting his equipment.  The ball glances off the hubcap and gently returns and hits Ed S.  If we were playing by USGA rules he would have incurred an additional 2 shot penalty for the ball hitting himself.  There is a good chance this would be a record for being penalized 4 shots with only 1 shot. The madness of it all.  🌟⛳
